The newly announced OPPO R-series flagship catches everyone’s eyes, undoubtedly. In comparison to the last year’s OPPO R11, the OPPO R15 launched way earlier. But the latter doesn’t affect weaker features. Vice versa, if the selling points of the R11 were the VOOC flash charge, smart double shot, Star screen, and a couple of other specs, the OPPO R15 comes with a Super Vision Full Screen, Full Screen Multitasking, AI, ColorOS 5.0, Gradual Design, and many more.
OPPO R15 Design
Though the full-screen technology first appeared on the Xiaomi Mi MIX, which has been launched more than a year ago, it has become a mainstream way later, in the second half of 2017. So we can say all the previous full-screen approaches were a warm-up period before the actual boom.

With the launch of the iPhone X, everything changed. The so-called bangs screen has become a mainstream. And though OPPO has launched a full-screen smartphone last year in face of the R11s, the OPPO R15 adopted this new technology not to be left behind. The phone uses a 6.28-inch 19:9 aspect ratio Super-V Display super-wide FOV screen with a screen ratio of 90%.
Thanks to the special screen design the body size of the OPPO R15 has become narrower. Though the height remains the same, the width is narrowed by 0.3mm. So we can state after putting a 6.0-inch screen into a 5.5-inch ordinary phone body, now another 6.28-inch display is inserted into the same body.
If talking in details, the OPPO R15’s bangs area has a 20MP front camera, which is accompanied by a traditional speaker and a proximity sensor. Moreover, the screen’s edge is designed with an extra-large arc angle identical to the outer frame. That’s why the visual effect is more harmonious.
Due to the use of a more advanced COF packaging technology, the body’s chin is further narrowed, only 5mm. The availability of the COP package is not guaranteed and it is expensive, and it has not been adopted in consideration of shipping issues. This is the main reason why many manufacturers don’t use it on their phones.
In addition, the body material of the OPPO R15 has also changed. Before that, the manufacturer has been using metal as the main material for its phones for four years. But with the launch of this handset, it got back to 2014, when it was using the glass on the R1. Plus, there are four color options to choose from – Snow White, Hot Red, Star Purple, and Dream Mirror Red. As you can see, from various angles it will provide various color gradient effect.
At last, the OPPO R15 still retains the 3.5mm audio jack, and the phone still uses a micro USB port as a data interface.
OPPO R15 Hardware
Many will be disappointed when seeing the OPPO R15 comes with a MediaTek chip, but we should also take into account this is the latest chip of the Taiwanese chip maker that comes with tons of improvements including AI.
The OPPO R15 is packed with an Helio P60, which uses TSMC’s latest 12nm process technology and has a 4*2.0GHz @A73 + 4*2.0GHz @A53 octa-core design with an ARM Mali G72 MP3 graphics processor. Plus, the SoC is paired with a 6GB of RAM and 128GB of ROM.
Though the Helio P60 is the first chip of company to come with AI (that’s why we have compared it to other chips with AI), it’s a super mid-range processor. Therefore, its closest rival should be taken the Snapdragon 660. When looking at the CPU performance, we see the P60 shows better results than its rival. We can’t say the same about the GPU performance because Adreno GPU is way better. However, the overall performance is close to Snapdragon 660, 140K at AnTuTu.
The super mid-range chips have been made as cheaper variants of the flagships processors. So it’s quite reasonable to see the smooth and stable performance when running heavy games such as the Honor of Kings at the high frame rate mode. As we can see, the CPU occupancy is 28% only. Honestly, we should note OPPO is in a deep cooperation with Tencent. Last year, OPPO has reached a cooperation with Tencent for Honor of Kings. The latter has a targeted optimization for many R-series phones. In 2018, in addition to Honor of Kings, OPPO and Tencent also made many optimizations for the “Jedi Survival: The whole army attack”, “Jedi survival: to stimulate the battlefield” and “QQ Speed”.
OPPO R15 Software: ColorOS 5.0
With the launch of the OPPO R15, the company has also undergone a major upgrade on the system. The phone runs on ColorOS 5.0 based on Android 8.1. Actually, there are three major improvements concerning the screen adaption, Android 8.0 new features, and AI.
In order to provide a full-screen gesture, the notification bar of ColorOS 5.0 was changed from a slide-out call to a pull-down call. Plus, an APP icon is added.
In terms of AI, the most prominent change is the addition of AI life assistant function. The user’s frequently used functions such as the weather information is aggregated in the rightmost screen, which can further enhance the use efficiency of mobile phones.
ColorOS 5.0 also offers new intelligent screen recognition capabilities. Pressing and holding a text on the screen recognition application will pop up a quick card, quickly create a schedule, and learn about video or word editing. Moreover, OPPO also provides user-friendly screen recognition applications that users can choose to switch between the specified application screen recognition functions to avoid inadvertently.
This software supports the word and photo translation functions.
The Voice Assistant’s recognition rate and usage scene in the ColorOS 5.0 have also been greatly improved as well. These features can be used to set alarms quickly.
OPPO R15 Camera
The OPPO R15’s biggest progress is to join the 3-HDR real-time classification exposure technology. In the OPPO R11s, when the self-timer was used in dark environment, four sub-pixels can be combined into a 2μm RGBG large pixel to enhance the brightness of the photo. As for the OPPO R15, the 3-HDR real-time step-exposure technology can turn sub-pixels into the RGBG pixels. The latter, in order to achieve different options, enhance the photo exposure control capabilities.
The phone’s main camera has been upgraded from the previous IMX398 to the new IMX519. However, the latter continues using the 16MP resolution sensor of the IMX398 with an aperture of f/1.7, a single pixel area of 1.22 instead of 1.12, and a sensor that is increased from 1/2.8 to 1/2.6. But the IMX 519 comes with a number of improvements such as an increased sensor area, the entering light amount, the photo sampling rate of 60 frames, and many more. The second sensor comes with a resolution of 5MP and an aperture of f/2.2.
OPPO R15 Battery
The phone is packed with a 3450mAh battery supporting OPPO’s own VOOC flash charge technology. Thanks to it the phone can be fully charged in 67 minutes only. Moreover, after 30 minutes of charging it will reach 60% of power, while after 50 minutes it charges up to 90%. Thus the last 17 minutes the phone is charged at low power.
In terms of discharging and power consumption, the test shows the OPPO R15 can be used for up to 10 hours and you can play games for 5 hours.
The Bottom Line
Undoubtedly, the OPPO R15 will make a tough competition to the top branded flagships. It’s been so since the OPPO R9/9s and the R11/11s. So seems nothing will change for this model. Actually, the phone comes with almost all trendy features and looks amazing. It uses a full-screen with an astonishing viewing experience. The camera performance is great. The battery durability is satisfactory. Seems the only complaint may refer to the MediaTek chip. But we should keep in mind we are dealing with an AI SoC. And though it’s not a high-end chipset, the Helio P60 is capable of doing many things better than its competitors. Honestly, OPPO has never been using top-notch chips on its flagships. On the other, hand the manufacturer has left a plenty of room for the sequel of the OPPO R15 – the OPPO R15s that should be launched in the second half of the year. Say, it may come with an under-display fingerprint like the VIVO X21 UD.
