October was a very important month for Huawei. It launched the first phones sporting the first AI mobile chips, Kirin 970. The company unveiled the Huawei Mate 10 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro in Germany on October 16 that was followed by the domestic launch on October 20. The Huawei Mate 10 has been available for purchase immediately after the launch event. But the Mate 10 Pro and the Mate 10 Porsche Edition has not been sold at any retailer until today. On November 15, the Mate 10 Pro will go on sale in China (first), while the Huawei Mate 10 Porsche will be offered only via authorized stores.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is packed with an 18:9 full-screen 6-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels. Thus it is equipped with one of the best displays that are also the trendiest feature on current smartphones. As we said, it is powered by the first mobile SoC with AI. There is also a 6GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, 4000mAh battery, and Leica dual-camera using a 20MP black/white sensor as well as a 12MP color sensor with an aperture of f/1.6, OIS, 2 x dual-camera zoom, and 4 in 1 hybrid focusing technology. This is also the first IP67 certified (dustproof and waterproof) smartphone with a full-screen launched in China. Briefly on Huawei Kirin 970

First, the Kirin 970 uses the most advanced TSMC 10nm process node with over 5.5 billion transistors. The previous-gen Kirin 960 came with a 16nm process technology. So the overall efficiency has been improved by 37.5%. However, it still uses an octa-core architecture using A73 and A53 cores and 12-cores GPU (Mali-G72). It is identical to the Snapdragon 835’s architecture, but Huawei has developed an energy-efficient heterogeneous computing architecture to enhance the AI power. This new and innovative technology is called HiAI, which is the first to come with a built-in independent NPU (Neural Network Processing Unit). That’s why the image recognition speed has reached up to 2005/min. It’s the way higher than the industry level.

Currently, we’re using 4G network. Of course, there is also the 4.5G, but it’s mainly tested in several regions. To solve it the Kirin 970 brings a new technology consisting of three innovations:

  • 4×4 MMIO (multi-user input and output;
  • 5CC CA (Carrier Aggregation);
  • 256QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation).

Apart from this, it is the first chip to support LTE Cat.18 (download) and Cat.13 (upload) with the industry’s highest peak download rate of 1.2Gbps. You can even use the SIM card to surf via LTE and use the VoLTE in the LTE network via the second card. At last for the connectivity improvements, the Kirin 970 supports AI noise reduction technology.
